Spyware becoming worst tech support problem

Heh. Slashdot has a thread about a Wired.com article on the tech support problems spyware creates.

Back when I was consulting, I had a CD I would bring with me with copies of Spybot Search & Destroy (the direct link has been DDoSed for a while) and Ad-aware. All I would need to do, really is to take a quick look at the system tray and the running processes to see what was going on.

Even though my clients were grateful I was removing spyware for them, the worst part would be when I would have to remove the spyware again because they really liked that screensaver/kid re-installed Kazaa/saw a new game they wanted to try, etc. That was always fun.

Out of curiosity, has this become an issue with Mac platforms?

I'm completely with ya on that one. Just today I removed mucho spyware from this computer, finally decided to reimage and then set up for a new user. This new user was on the internet d/l Real Player or something when I just walked by. I wanted to yell "Stay away from Kazaa, fool!" but I'll just wait until I'm called back over to stop annoying pop ups and troubleshoot slowness for the same user in about a week. Heheh
